A programme for tracking development in different environments.
The Variety Track Pack is an in-depth tracking programme focused on developing a functional tracking unit: a dog tracking ahead as the primary agent, and a human learning to remain perceptually available, physically responsive, and as unobtrusive as possible.
This is not a handler-led tracking system.
Handlers do not direct the dog, interpret the track, or decide what should happen next.
Instead, handlers are taught how to receive information from the dog through the tracking line, and how to move their own body in response so that the dog’s natural forward tracking, accuracy, and efficiency are supported rather than interrupted.
Tracking begins with the handler learning to create and maintain a sensorimotor loop which is sympathetic with the way dogs need to work on a track.
Handlers are given specific techniques to:
Many of these skills are counter-intuitive to human ethology. They require handlers to relinquish habits of leading, correcting, anticipating, or problem-solving, and instead learn how to stay available so the dog can be clearly “heard” at all times.
The aim is an efficient, economical tracking style in which:
Over time, dog and handler move together as a coherent unit, with the handler learning how little input is actually required.
Each day begins with a short technical session at Verity Farm (unless otherwise advised), focused on reinforcing core handling skills before tracking takes place.
As the tracking unit becomes stable, we take those skills into increasingly complex environments, allowing handlers to embed their perceptual and movement skills rather than chase novelty or predefined challenges.
Over the programme, tracking may include work such as:
This list is not prescriptive.
The environments and tasks used will always be appropriate to:
Participants will be notified of off-site venues close to the date of each activity. All tracking takes place in South Dorset, but not necessarily at Verity Farm.
This programme is for people who want to:
It is particularly suited to dogs who benefit from being allowed to work forward, independently, and with clarity.
Tracking at Dogtaggs emphasises observation, attention, and clear communication within the team. Handlers learn to guide and support their dogs while remaining coherent, calm, and readable. Dogs, born to read environmental and human cues, respond voluntarily and accurately when handlers create clear, accessible tasks.
Participation fosters increased cooperation, stronger dog-handler relationships, and greater confidence in varied tracking environments. Tracking is structured learning, not a competitive or therapeutic service.
Booking onto a Tracking programme is just the start. Here are some words from our Trackers who have enjoyed some great tracking at the farm and in the local Dorset countryside.
“Tracking in a VTP group allows me to learn how my dog is operating in the environment. If I pay attention we can communicate in the tracking endeavour and the result is chemically rewarding, especially for the dog! Guided by Pat we support one another as we accept new challenges and develop our skills. Plenty of fun and laughter along the way. Highly recommend.” Ann with Scrumpy
“If you are looking for a unique experience to develop the relationship between yourself and your dog this is the place for you. Pat provides fascinating insight and guidance, through fun activities set in the beautiful Dorset countryside. Beware the courses are highly addictive, and your dog will love you for it!” Mari with George and Pablo
“One of the many great things about DT is that all dogs are accepted for who they are, and you'll be supported no matter what your current tracking experience is. Would recommend to anyone, whether you've been tracking before, or are a complete beginner. My relationship with my dogs changed from the first day we went there, and I haven't looked back.” Rachel with Daisy
